Today, there is much hype about security while using the internet. This is not just from large organizations like Amazon, Trans Union, or Ford Motor Company. Entities if all sizes must find a way to protect their customer data. Many of today’s organizations, big and small, are turning to cloud storage as a way of storing customer data.

A cloud offers businesses an opportunity to store the customer data without compromising it. There is a risk of the data being compromised with a cloud system. This risk is that the site the cloud is at might become compromised by being hacked. When a site is hacked all user data is thereby compromised.

Cloud systems are convenient. The risk they pose is too much for some companies. These companies are utilizing more than one site and more than one system to back up and store their customer data. This can offer businesses an opportunity to comply with all rules and regulations regarding customer data.

In the United States, there are rules, such as the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) to protect patient information. Hospitals, doctors offices, and other medical professionals, for instance, will keep their customer data on a private cloud system. This allows the medical professionals to comply with the electronic records, but it also permits them to comply with HIPAA.

There are companies utilizing both private and public storage systems. These are companies such as Amazon, Best Buy, and many other entities like them. When a company uses public and private storage systems they are protecting data as best as they can. The private cloud system will offer companies an opportunity to store their customer data from within. A public storage system means they are relying on sites like DropBox to handle their customer data storage.

There are many IT (Information Technology) departments of several companies who are tasked with creating and maintaining their companies own cloud storage system. This permits companies to keep the data safer than if the company were to rely on a site like DropBox.

A private cloud system will offer its customers a flexible solution. When using services like Amazon Web Services, the customer is responsible for managing all data on the server. This means that the customer is charged on a per use basis. The customer or the IT department at the company will manage everything that is necessary for the company to operate.

Which is a better solution? This is a difficult question to answer. If you are a company looking to grow and offer your customers a solution that can create ease in their life, you will want to use a private cloud system. However, if you are an individual who wants to store things such as the pictures from your child’s birthday, you will want to use a service like DropBox.

Whether you choose to have a public storage system or a private one is up to your needs and the needs of your business. The private storage does not necessarily offer its users a better solution as far as security is concerned. When utilizing a private storage one must keep in mind that there is usually not a free trial or amount of data you can store on the private server. The choice is entirely up to you.
